MYBA’s mission is to provide a safe and balanced learning environment for players of all abilities that develops the skills, character, sportsmanship and teamwork of Medfield school children grades 1-8. All children are encouraged to participate, regardless of skill level. We want children to have a positive experience and come back every year.
See our Mission page for more information.
Financial hardship will not prevent any child from playing.
Please know that you can freely discuss this, or any matter privately and in confidence with any MYBA Board Member.
MYBA provides scholarships to the program for those with a financial need.
Please contact MYBA Community Liaison Kiren Annigeri or any other MYBA Board member for additional information.
The standard registration period for winter In-Town basketball is mid-August to mid-October. The primary reason is for the planning of teams and gym time. Additionally, travel basketball tryouts are generally held at the end of September and all participants must be registered with MYBA.
The late registration period generally begins October 16th and includes a $25 late fee per player.
In-Town registration is required in order to participate in the Travel tryout process. Travel tryouts are generally held mid to late September and potentially into early October.
Once travel basketball teams are selected, a separate registration (with additional travel basketball fee) will be distributed to the teams.
It is our mission to provide all kids grades 1-8, regardless of skill level, the opportunity to play basketball. We provide this opportunity via our In-Town program. The MYBA Travel Basketball program is extra basketball in addition to In-Town.
It is our belief that a robust In-Town program that includes participation from all players provides the most fulfilling and positive experience for the players. Our goal is to serve all kids in the community.
The goal for the In-Town program is to create a fun and positive atmosphere for kids to simply enjoy the game of basketball.
The Travel program and the Metrowest League that MYBA participates in provide a more competitive basketball environment. The goal here is also for kids to have fun but it is definitely a more competitive environment in all aspects. The level of play in Metrowest is sometimes too advanced for some kids.
Having two programs for older kids provides two different experiences, each with their own benefits. Most kids enjoy the more “laid-back” atmosphere when playing In-Town. Kids that enjoy more basketball and/or have the competitive instinct enjoy that experience playing in the Travel program.
Each year, MYBA strives to select as many kids as possible from the tryout participants for Travel teams. Over the past few years we’ve increased the number of teams we can support which has meant fewer kids not being selected for a team. However, our available gym time to support practices and games for travel teams is at capacity.
Unfortunately, each year there are some kids that are not selected for a travel team. For those kids not selected, it should not be considered the end of their season. These kids will still be able to play In-Town and there are other opportunities to play basketball such as CYO.
The details are outlined on our Travel Tryout Process page.
